Metronidazole is a limited spectrum antibiotic that actively deters the growth of protozoa, anaerobic gram-positive, and anaerobic gram-negative bacteria. The first use of this antibiotic was to suppress protozoans such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis. It has been used to repress the growth of gram-negative anaerobes belonging to the Bacteroides and Fusobacterium, and gram-positive anaerobes such aspeptostreptococcus and Clostridia. The advantages of this antibiotic is that it affects a high percentage of gram-negative bacteria and has greater tissue penetration.

El metronidazol es un antibiótico de espectro limitado que impide activamente el crecimiento de bacterias protozoarias, grampositivas anaerobias y gramnegativas anaerobias. La primera vez que se utilizó este antibiótico fue para suprimir protozoos como Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia y Trichomonas vaginalis. Se ha usado para reprimir el crecimiento de anaerobios gramnegativos pertenecientes a los Bacteroides y Fusobacterium, y anaerobios grampositivos como los aspeptostreptococcus y Clostridia. La ventaja de este antibiótico es que afecta a un alto porcentaje de bacterias gramnegativas y tiene una mayor penetración tisular.
Solubilidad
Soluble en agua (10 mg/ml a 20 °C), etanol, metanol, cloroformo y dimetilsulfóxido.
