tert-Butyl hydroperoxide is used as an initiator for radical polymerization and in various oxidation process such as sharpless epoxidation. It is involved in osmium catalyzed vicinal hydroxylation of olefins under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, it is used in catalytic asymmetric oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides using binaphthol as a chiral auxiliary and in the oxidation of dibenzothiophenes. It plays an important role for the introduction of peroxy groups in organic synthesis.

Aplicación
El hidroperóxido de terc-butilo se utiliza como iniciador en la polimerización radical y en varios procesos de oxidación como la epoxidación sin ácido. Participa en la hidroxilación vecinal catalizada de osmio de olefinas en condiciones alcalinas. Además, se utiliza en la oxidación catalítica asimétrica de sulfuros a sulfóxidos empleando binaftol como auxiliar quiral y en la oxidación de dibenzotiofenos. Desempeña un papel importante en la introducción de grupos peroxi en la síntesis orgánica.

Miscible con agua y éter dietílico.
